Droupadi Murmu, President of India will visit Slovakia this week, the first Presidential visit after 29 years since Shankar Dayal Sharma's visit in 1996. The visit comes at a time when India and Slovakia are looking to deepen their cooperation in fields like business, information technology, automobile production, pharmaceuticals, and defence.

In an interview, Indian Ambassador to Slovakia Apoorva Srivastava said that 2025 will be a landmark year in India-Slovakia relations. “Slovakia is extremely important for India in terms of economic cooperation with the EU. In fact, the country can be a gateway to Europe for India. Two senior ministers from Slovakia and two business delegations have already visited India in recent months, and the visit of the Indian President shows that there is a strong intent to deepen ties,” Srivastava said.

India-Slovakia trade has increased nearly 15% annually and totaled $1.3 billion in 2024, going above the one billion mark for the first time. India buys engineering, electronics and automobile goods from Slovakia and exports footwear, fabrics, engineering and automobile components. There are 6,000 Indian citizens, of which 300 are students, in Slovakia. It is reported that the demand for Indian labor and technical professionals is increasing. The President of India will have a delegation-level and a bilateral meeting with President of Slovakia, Peter Pellegrini. PM Robert Fico of Slovakia will also be calling on President Murmu. President of Slovakia will also host a state banquet in President Murmu's honour.

Sources indicate that the Indian government is currently negotiating a mobility partnership with Slovakia to facilitate the movement of skilled professionals between the two nations. While India and Slovakia have had a defence agreement since 1995, both countries are now looking at how to take the defence partnership to the next level through collaborative manufacturing partnerships and military exercises as well.
